The American Civil War drastically changed the outlook of the entire Appalachian Region politically, socially, and economically during and after the war. Many voters in the region supported the Constitutional Union party to not have any regional conflict in the 1860 presidential election when Abraham Lincoln became president. Appalachia’s views were completely opposite from the rest of the South. The region was directly affected by hosting several battles mainly in Virginia, but several other states in the region. The battles throughout the region destroyed buildings and crops.
